It’s been a hot summer thus far. Here are two pics from July that I like.

MTA Budget Shortfall

An MTA budget shortfall of almost $400 million threatens to affect bus and subway service. One of the lines that was proposed to be cut was the W train, which provides local service in Astoria and in Manhattan on Broadway. Currently the plans are to discontinue W train service leaving just the N train in Astoria. No additional N train service will be added which will create possible crowded trains and delays.

Passengers leave an N train at Broadway Station in Queens on Dec. 16, 2009. If proposed cuts are approved, the N train will be the only train serving Astoria.

The W train’s days may be numbered.

Joe Napolitano is concerned that additional N train service will not be available.

Jamell Frasier takes the W train to work every day. He is worried about overcrowding.

This past week was characterized by tragedy and heat. Always a tough week.

Raul Geraldo Escalante (right) and Yolanda Pablo grieve for their son Axel Pablo at their apartment in East Harlem on Aug. 14, 2009. Pablo was killed by a cab driver on E. 112th Street on Aug. 13, 2009.

The Birdman of Washington Square Park

I was walking through Washington Square Park and I saw a man covered in pigeons. I went closer to inspect and started talking to him. His name is Paul and he says he’s simply known as “The Birdman.” He is in the park every day to feed the pigeons because he just loves their company.
